Why Maintain Correct Tire Pressure

Your tires are tremendously important to the proper performance of your vehicle , they are the only part of your car that has contact with the road after all. Despite this, tires are one of the most neglected features on any vehicle. One of the simplest ways to maintain your tires is to just stay on top of their tire pressure. Tire pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (psi) and is crucial to your tires performing as they are intended to, here’s a quick overview of why it’s so important.
Pressure in the tire allows the tire to adequately support your vehicle and control its handling properly. With the right amount of pressure in each tire, your vehicle will handle as well as it possible can and will be as safe as it can be. In addition to improved handling, your tires will wear more evenly and more slowly, which makes your tires last much longer. The Potential Consequences of Poor Tire Maintenance

Improper inflation can cause a ton of issues, the least of which is increased wear on your tires tread. If tires are under inflated, primarily they will wear much more on the outside edges and decreased your overall fuel economy. There is an added risk because they will suffer from increased heat build up inside the tire which can lead to the structure of the tire being irreparably damaged. If the tire is over inflated, the center band of the tire will be increasingly worn and it will make the tire much more likely to be punctured or broken by any impact. Both circumstances put the vehicle at much more of a risk of the tires failing, including blowing out,  which can lead to a serious accident.
In order to check your tire’s pressure, you’ll need a tire pressure gauge and you will need to know what your tire’s optimal inflation level is. You can find your vehicle’s optimal tire pressure in many places, including in your owner’s manual, online, and even on your driver’s side door frame which is often the easiest place to look. Tire pressure gauges generally simply require you to press the gauge firmly on your tire’s valve and take a reading. Tires will have measurement on the side denoting the max psi the tire can handle, never fill the tire above that reading as that puts the tires at risk.
