Tips for Driving in the Snow

Driving in the snow

Only drive if absolutely necessary when Denver roads are covered in ice and snow. Even if you’re experienced at driving in inclement weather, others Arvada drivers may not be as good at it.

If you must drive in hazardous winter weather, follow these tips for driving in the snow:

  • Keep your speed slower: Drive slower than you usually would. It’s more difficult to stop when Boulder’s or Colorado’s streets are frozen, so allow plenty of room between your car and other vehicles.
  • Brake slowly: It takes longer to reach a full stop on snow packed or icy roads, so don’t slam on your brakes. Instead, ease off the accelerator and gently press on the brake.
  • Steer into a skid: It may feel counter-intuitive, but if you start to slide, turn your steering wheel in the direction you’re moving to steer into a skid.
  • Build Momentum when driving uphill: When traveling up a hill in the winter, try to build momentum and get a running start because if you slow down, you might start to slide backward.
